"Although I have flirted with numerous art forms, I am passionate about glass.
It has the unique ability to change form, from solid to liquid and back to solid,
it can be clear or opaque, change color, depending on the light, sparkle, glow,
reflect, change shape AND is endlessly challenging and beautiful."

Dorothy Wayne is a Seattle based glass artist. Her artistic journey exploring a variety of media paved the way for her art glass. Dorothy has created tromp l’oeil paintings and murals, oil paintings and metal sculpture. After years of fused glass classes, workshops and exploration, she became intrigued with three dimensional designs in glass, travelling to Milan to study with internationally known glass artist, Miriam di Fiore. Dorothy travels the world searching for scenes that will translate into glass. She uses her photographic images as an inspiration for the final glass piece. In order to realize the amazing depth and detail that contribute to the three-dimensional, multiple layers of glass are added in successive firings at temperatures approaching 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. Each piece may involve five to seven layers, taking 18-36 kiln hours per layer. Photographs do not provide a true representation of the layered effect; even examining a piece in person, one may be inclined to believe that the pieces are painted. Each layer is created by painstakingly applying minute grains of glass (frit), blended for color and applied with utmost care. Some of the larger elements, such as trees, begin with strings of glass formed and manipulated by pulling and pushing the heated glass to create the organic shapes. Drawing on her metal working skills, Dorothy creates the tree stands by cutting, welding and forging the shapes out of steel, copper, and sometimes, stone, in order to enhance the individual art glass. Each unique stand can stand alone as art.
